A CIPS Diploma in Procurement and Supply can be a challenging but rewarding path, especially for busy professionals balancing work, life and study. Daniel O’Sullivan, who works at the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, shares how he completed his Diploma with Oxford College of Procurement and Supply, gaining valuable skills and insights to advance his career.
What inspired you to start your CIPS journey?
Having been in the team for four years, I wanted to deepen my understanding of the core subjects within procurement and supply. I saw the CIPS Diploma in Procurement and Supply as an opportunity to push myself to achieve a recognised professional qualification that would support my career development.
Which study method did you choose for your CIPS qualification and why?
I chose Distance Learning because it offered the flexibility I needed while working full-time and raising two small children.
How did you find the learning experience?
From start to finish, it was a fantastic experience. Becca in the Support Team answered countless questions from me, no matter how small and the online tutorials and supporting documents were excellent. The tutors provided clear guidance ahead of exams, which proved invaluable in helping me prepare with confidence.
What key skills or knowledge have you gained from completing your CIPS qualification?
I now have a shorthand understanding of the concepts and discussions that come up at Governance Boards, which has made my contributions more informed and impactful.
How has achieving your CIPS qualification impacted your career so far?
It’s given me a much better grasp of what goes into buying goods and services, helping me see the bigger picture in procurement decisions and processes.
What advice would you give to someone considering starting their CIPS studies?
Make sure you give yourself enough time to commit to the qualification and avoid starting right before a major life event, like having a child!
Would you recommend studying CIPS with Oxford College of Procurement and Supply?
Absolutely. They are incredibly supportive and quick to resolve any issues, such as ensuring I was able to sit my final exams when CIPS admin delays threatened to prevent it. The tutors break down complex topics into manageable parts, making it much easier to understand and apply the material.
Daniel’s journey through the CIPS Diploma in Procurement and Supply shows that with the right support and flexible study options, it’s possible to balance work, family and professional growth and come out with a globally recognised qualification.
