Achieving MCIPS is a major milestone for procurement professionals and a clear sign of commitment, capability and career progression.

In this Q&A, Andrew shares his journey through CIPS Levels 4, 5 and 6 with Oxford College of Procurement and Supply, including what helped him stay consistent, how he balanced studying with work, and the advice he’d give to others aiming for MCIPS.

What made you choose Oxford College of Procurement and Supply for your CIPS studies?

I was recommended Oxford College of Procurement and Supply through a colleague at work when I started CIPS Level 4 in 2018. When I started Level 5 in 2023, I decided to go with yourselves as I had a good experience at Level 4.

What helped you stay consistent from Level 4 through to Level 6?

I had breaks each year so I didn’t get burnt out. I took every summer off, so I could focus for eight months of the year.

I also had help from my new employer in Level 6 with additional study leave which helped.

Which study method did you choose and how did you find it?

I had remote lectures and I found this easier than the classroom lectures I had at Level 4, as I have only just learned to drive so rushing about with classroom lectures was time consuming.

When I started Level 6 I had a new job who offered study time and study leave and achieved higher grades as well as less of my evening being taken up with study.

How did you balance studying alongside work and other commitments?

Planning breaks helped me keep a good balance and avoid burnout. Remote learning also made it easier to fit studying around work, especially when I didn’t have to factor in travel time.

Support from my employer made a big difference too, particularly at Level 6 where I had additional study time and study leave to stay on top of everything.

What advice would you give to someone aiming for MCIPS?

Seek employer buy in so you can use work time to study, as this will help with the burn out.

Also look for management advice on studies. Even if they haven’t studied CIPS they have experience in the sector that will help with exams.

Also always use real life examples in exams. I noticed this got me higher marks in the questions I used them in.

Final thoughts on Andrew’s journey to MCIPS

Andrew’s story shows that working towards MCIPS is absolutely achievable, especially when you find a study approach that fits around real life.

Taking planned breaks, choosing a learning format that works with your schedule, and getting employer support can all have a huge impact on both your results and your wellbeing throughout the qualification.
