Investing in your growth is one of the smartest decisions you can make and for procurement professionals, CIPS courses offer the perfect way to gain global recognition, deepen expertise and unlock new career opportunities.
We spoke with Bassel Akkad, a graduate of the CIPS Diploma in Procurement and Supply at Oxford College of Procurement and Supply, to hear how his studies helped him build confidence, knowledge and career momentum.
What inspired you to start your CIPS journey?
I started my CIPS journey because I wanted to formalise my procurement experience with an internationally recognised qualification. Having worked in complex and high-value environments, including the UN and now the The Growth Company, I wanted to strengthen my theoretical understanding and align my practice with global professional standards.
Which study method did you choose for your CIPS qualification and why?
I chose the Distance Learning option through Oxford College of Procurement and Supply. It suited my work schedule perfectly and gave me the flexibility to study at my own pace while still feeling supported by the tutors.
How did you find the learning experience?
The learning experience was excellent. The content was clear, relevant, and easy to apply to real procurement situations. Katie Jarvis and David Dearing were the best part of the journey — their support and teaching style genuinely inspired me to stay motivated and keep progressing until I succeeded.
What key skills or knowledge have you gained from completing your CIPS qualification?
CIPS has deepened my understanding of ethical and responsible sourcing, contract management, and negotiation strategies. It also strengthened my knowledge of supply chain risk management and market analysis, which I now apply regularly in my role. I also gained valuable insight into the technologies used in modern procurement, such as ERP and MRP systems, and learned the differences between multiple stocking and purchasing systems.
How has achieving your CIPS qualification impacted your career so far?
IIt’s given me more confidence and credibility in my professional decisions. Since completing it, I’ve been actively exploring higher-level and better-paid opportunities to progress my career and apply my skills in more strategic procurement roles.
What advice would you give to someone considering starting their CIPS studies?
Be consistent, take good notes, and relate everything you study to your real work environment. CIPS isn’t just about passing exams, it’s about learning how to make better commercial decisions in practice.
Would you recommend studying CIPS with Oxford College of Procurement and Supply?
Absolutely. I couldn’t recommend Oxford College of Procurement and Supply enough. The whole experience was clear, well structured, and perfectly suited for someone working full time. What really made it special were the people — Katie Jarvis Grove was an incredible tutor who never stopped encouraging me, even when it took me longer to finish. Becca and the admin team were always there to help with everything I needed. I honestly felt supported, understood, and cared for from start to finish, and that meant a lot to me.
